Hat Yai trip – Prologue

Airticket is always the cheapest when an airline launch a new destination. I received mailer that Jetstar is launching flight to Hat Yai from $37. I always wanted to visit Hat Yai since it is doable as 3 or 4 days weekend trip and the flight time is 1h 40min. This route used to be monopolised by Tiger and I'm always unable to find cheap promotion ticket over the weekend.

Jetstar return ticket including taxes cost $74 compared to Tiger return ticket $172 on the same date. However Jetstar is flying 4 times a week on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sun compared to Tiger which flies daily. I choose the best combination of flying out on Friday evening and returning on Monday night so technically we have 3 full days in Hat Yai.

Hat Yai is the largest town in Songkhla Province and the fourth largest in Thailand. It is a popular pit stop for those who drove up from Singapore and Malaysia hence most of the tourists are Singaporeans and Malaysian, foreigners are rarely seen in Hat Yai. Surprisingly, most of the locals can speak Mandarin and dialect.

After shortlisting the accommodation, we decided to stay at Grand Pink Hotel Hat Yai. It's centrally located beside Lee Garden Plaza Hotel which is extremely convenient. The rate for standard room is THB1,150 per night and no breakfast is provided by the hotel.

I tried searching for a driver online but there was few recommendation and most hire the driver from the local agency or through hotel arrangement. Hence I decided to play by the ear and arrange for the driver when we are there instead for the day to Samila Beach. Getting around Hat Yai is not a problem as songthaew are easily available and range from THB20 - 40.
